SUMMARY:2017 United Nations Global Road Safety Week (8-14 May 2017)
DESCRIPTION:The UN Road Safety Collaboration is pleased to announce that the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week will be held from 8-14 May 2017. The Week will focus on speed and what can be done to address this key risk factor for road traffic deaths and injuries. Speed contributes to around one-third of all fatal road traffic crashes in high-income countries\, and up to half in low- and middle-income countries. \nCountries successfully reducing road traffic deaths have done so by prioritizing safety when managing speed. Among the proven strategies to address speed include: \n\nSetting and enforcing speed limits appropriate to the function of each road\, for example:\n\nSetting and enforcing a maximum speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour in urban areas;\nSetting and enforcing a maximum speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour on roads with high concentrations of pedestrians\, cyclists and motorized traffic;\n\n\n\n\nEnforcing speed limits through the use of automatic speed cameras;\nInstalling intelligent speed adaptation technology in vehicles;\nBuilding or modifying roads to include features that limit speed such as traffic lights\, roundabouts and speed humps.\n\nThe Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week seeks to increase understanding of the dangers of speed and generate action on measures to address speed\, thereby saving lives on the roads. \nAll stakeholders – national and local governments\, international agencies\, civil society organizations\, private companies\, and the public generally – are invited to plan and host events marking the Week. \n

SUMMARY:Automated Vehicles 2017: Planning the Next Disruptive Technology
DESCRIPTION:The era of driverless vehicles is just around the corner. How can we leverage this technology to help create the kinds of cities we want to live and work in? \nAutomated vehicles (AVs)—more popularly known as driverless cars—offer numerous societal benefits. Enhanced personal mobility (particularly for “car-less” populations)\, a decline in the number of injuries and fatalities\, increased productivity due to freed up time while travelling\, and reduced congestion are just some of the anticipated benefits. As the technology is being applied to the movement of goods as well as people\, a number of commercial benefits are also expected. \nAs a disruptive technology that is poised to change the ways in which people and goods are moved\, there will be numerous impacts within and between cities. Given there is public and government support for sustainable and complete communities\, it’s even more important that we make sure that these priorities thrive in light of AVs. \nIt is for these reasons that The Conference Board of Canada will be holding the 2nd annual Automated Vehicles 2017 April 19 and 20 in Toronto. Building on the success of last year’s conference\, which laid the foundation for key issues\, opportunities\, and challenges\, this year’s event will take the conversation to the next level; beyond fundamentals and scenarios to strategies for achieving desired outcomes. \nGain practical insights from national and international experts and leaders \nAt this event you will hear experts from across Canada and abroad share their insights on how to proactively manage the transition to a transportation sector that includes AVs\, while at the same time understanding key impacts on cities and the importance of a shared-vision for our cities. \nThis 2nd annual transportation conference will bring together industry experts\, government leaders and strategic thinkers with expertise on AVs as they relate to planning\, policy and practice. The event will offer a variety of insights\, and consider implications for industry\, all levels of government and the Canadian public at large. \n

SUMMARY:ITS World Congress
DESCRIPTION:“ITS—Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities” is the theme for the Congress\, bringing Melbourne’s reputation as the world’s most liveable city into the spotlight as we explore the benefits that ITS delivers to critical elements of our daily life. \nAustralia is at the forefront of development and deployment of ITS technologies in many fields. With a unique landscape Australia’s ITS industry has risen to the challenge of delivering solutions to enhance our daily lives. Our population is clustered in big cities with large urban areas where ITS technology such as managed motorways and free flow tolling are being leveraged to maintain the mobility of our growing cities. Long transport distances across our vast country encourage innovation and adoption of technology across our heavy vehicle fleet to enhance safety and efficiency. Australia has a strong and innovative mining sector that has embraced ITS technology such as driverless trains and driverless vehicles to improve efficiency and safety in tough economic conditions. Similar to other countries\, the important contribution that ITS can make to minimising harm from natural disasters has been recognised and is increasingly being deployed to great effect. \nIn collaboration with ITS Asia Pacific\, ERTICO and ITS America\, ITS Australia is working to prepare an engaging program.  In the tradition of ITS World Congresses there will be plenary\, scientific\, technical and interactive sessions\, a dynamic exhibition plus technical demonstration and tours that showcase the applications of the latest ITS technology.  This will be an opportunity for policy makers\, practitioners\, researchers and ITS providers to share information on social needs\, opinions and technical developments addressing modern transport issues. \nLiving in an ever connected world\, these themes are even more pressing in our busy cities and communities.  This World Congress will be Australia’s opportunity to foster further international cooperation in unleashing the power of ITS. \n
